By Graham Chalmers
He left our area as a promising young musician and he’s returning to play a charity gig with his own quartet.
The Emma Maltby Fund, which is devoted to the fight against cancer is close to ex-Knaresborough lad JJ Wheeler’s heart, partly because he himself is in remission from Hodgkins Lymphoma.
Having graduated from Birmingham Conservatoire with a first class degree in jazz, composer/percussionist Wheeler is rapidly becoming a renowned band leader in his own right, working with Britain’s best jazz players, and appearing on radio and TV.
Currently on a scholarship at the Royal Academy of Music, on Friday, October 4, Wheeler will be bringing his EMMF Quartet to Boston Spa Town Hall as part of The Emma Maltby Fund’s 10th anniversrary.
Playing alongside JJ, will be Ralph Brown on the Piano, Billy Marrows on the Guitar and Mike Monument on Bass – all superb musicians.
