FANS of 80s pop/ska band Madness will be treated to an abundance of the iconic group’s madcap hits when lively musical Our House debuts on the Harrogate Theatre stage.

Performed by the talented Harrogate St Andrew’s Players (HSAP), Our House will run from October 25 to 29 and will feature a boisterous and fun soundtrack including well-known hits Baggy Trousers, House of Fun, NW5 and, of course, the show’s signature tune Our House.

HSAP, which was started by a group of drama enthusiasts in 1969 who put on No No Nanette at St Andrew’s Church Hall in Starbeck, is the first amateur group in the local area to present this well-crafted show to Harrogate audiences after it enjoyed a successful 10 month run in London’s West End back in 2002 and won a 2003 Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical.

British actress Barbara Windsor called for the show to be revived in theatres up and down the country after she recalled seeing it in the West End in 2002 on the BBC Radio 2 Elaine Paige show last weekend.

“I absolutely loved it,” she said. “I wish they would revive it!” before she played a medley from the show.

HSAP Chairman Jennifer Cowling added: “Our House will be yet another Harrogate premiere on the Harrogate Theatre stage and HSAP feels both delighted and privileged to be the local group performing it.

“We have invited Barbara Windsor to one of our performances and hope she will relish the opportunity of seeing one of her favourite shows in our wonderful town.

“There’s certainly a real buzz around Our House at the moment and the cast are all feeling very excited and rehearsing extremely hard ahead of opening night.”

Our House combines a witty and expertly-crafted ‘Sliding Doors’ style romantic tale with the energetic songs of Madness.

The show follows such recent successes for HSAP as Fame, We Will Rock You, A Chorus Line and Little Shop of Horrors.

Our House is the story of Joe Casey who, on the night of his 16th birthday, takes Sarah, the girl of his dreams, out on their first date.

In an effort to impress her with bravado, he breaks into a building site overlooking his home on Casey Street, North London, which is owned by Mr Pressman, a high-end property developer.

The police turn up, at which point Joe’s life splits into two: the Good Joe, who stays to help, and Bad Joe, who flees the scene.

Two versions of Joe’s life are then played out as a result of one life-changing decision - one version ending in happiness the other in tragedy.

l Tickets for Our House cost from £11 with concessions available for senior citizens and group bookings.
