Cupcakes and ale may not seem like the most natural partnership, but brewers in Masham were so taken with the pairing they have started selling the treats in their own bistro.

Black Sheep Brewery now stocks Black Sheep Ale cupcakes, created by baker Jo Williams.

Jo makes the cakes at her business Cupcake Dreams, which she has been running from her farmhouse kitchen in Hunton near Bedale since the beginning of the year. She came up with the ale recipe after a challenge from her father-in-law, and confesses the cakes are now one of her bestsellers.

“My father-in-law is an avid Black Sheep Ale fan and challenged me to make a cupcake with it, so I set about devising a recipe!

“They are one of my bestsellers when I attend county shows and the ale makes the cake rise beautifully.”

The staff at Black Sheep Brewery were so impressed with Jo’s recipe that they have started to stock the cakes in their own outlet.

Helen Allison, Marketing Manager at the brewery, said: “I was a little sceptical when Jo told me that she had made cupcakes using Black Sheep Ale, however they are lovely and really tasty. We are very proud that our ale is specifically used in local produce and it’s fantastic these are one of Jo’s bestsellers.”
