A team of Royal Engineers based at Claro Barracks took double honours at this year’s Great Ripon Raft Race organised by charity Scuba Diving for All (SDA).
As well as winning the men’s race, the four members of 15 Field Squadron also took the prize for the best-decorated raft with their ‘Frank the Indian’ entry at the event on Saturday, August 25.
The winner of the mixed race was the Barrel of Laughs team from Sainsbury’s in Ripon, and the junior race winner was Raft 886 –made up of members of the 886 City of Ripon Squadron Air Training Corps.
Trevor White, of Scuba Diving for All, said: “We made a total of £1,883 on the day which was very good considering the weather forecast. Although there was no rain all day, the forecast was terrible and numbers were down as a result.”
The charity’s funds received a further boost the next day when the plastic duck race at the Water Rat pub raised another £768, with the winning duck purchased by Chloe Steward.
Other awards at the raft race included the ‘fastest losers’ and ‘most entertaining’ prizes which went to the Travis Perkins team from Ripon, and the ‘In the Drink’ prize which went to the Sainsbury’s team who carried on despite capsizing as soon as they entered the water.
