Ripon will be transformed into a spectacle of colour this weekend as the music and frivolity of St Wilfrid’s Procession fills the city’s streets.
Floats, bands and street entertainers will once again assemble on Studley Road on Saturday, August 3 at 1.30pm before setting off for the market square where St Wilfrid will officially join the procession – which is sponsored by Ripon’s EuraAudit UK accountants and tax advisors – at 2pm.
Coun Andrew Williams, chairman of the St Wilfrid’s Procession committee, said: “We are expecting more float entrants this year than we have had for several years. There will be entertainment throughout the afternoon on the market square including a steel band to keep the carnival mood going.”
The procession – now in its 51st year – will include anticipated arrival times along the route for the first time this year, to assist the public in planning where to watch the event. The event will also welcome Stray FM, Upstage Academy and the Surmandy Jugglers, before the parade ends at the cathedral for a special service at 4.30pm.
President of the procession committee John Richmond is now making a plea for everyone along the route to give generously, so the popular event can continue for years to come.
“We have had to raise in excess of £10,000 this year to stage the procession, which has all been raised by the hard work of the committee,” said Mr Richmond.
