The Royal Oak pub on Kirkgate is reviving an old Ripon tradition this year by offering free Wilfra tarts during the first week of August.

Legend has it that when St Wilfrid, or Wilfra – the seventh century founder of Ripon Cathedral – returned from an absence abroad the townsfolk of Ripon feasted in his honour.

It is believed the main dish they made during the first week of August – known as Wilfra Week – was an apple and cheese pie.

The Royal Oak’s head chef Jonathan Murray, who is baking the tarts, said: “Wilfra Week coincides with the Yorkshire Day celebrations so we thought it would be a great idea to combine the two events this year.

“Free tarts will be available throughout the first week of August to anyone coming to the Royal Oak.”

While the tarts may be free, Jonathan is hoping customers will make a charitable donation towards the Cathedral Development Fund and with this in mind a collection box will be on hand alongside the tarts.
