Ripon Library will be joining national celebrations of Local and Community History Month by hosting a local and family history fair.

In this second year of First World War centenary commemorations there will be a special emphasis on the history of Ripon and the surrounding area in the Great War at the event taking place on Thursday, May 7, from 11am-4pm.

The special event will showcase some of facilities for tracing family history in North Yorkshire and the resources available at Ripon Library.

The library has free access to Ancestry.com and to Findmypast.com, and also to the19th century British Library Newspapers Database.

These are websites where you can do online research of marriage, birth and death dates, learn about everyday life in the 19th century and much more.

Local historical societies, family history groups and community archaeology groups will be in attendance along with representatives from North Yorkshire County Record Office and Ripon Museums Trust. Members of the public will be able to find out what the organisations and societies have got to offer.

There will also be some children’s colouring activities in the junior library on a First World War theme.

At 11.30am there will be a half-hour talk from the Ripon Historical Society on Military Ripon before World War One.
