Connor Sheridan’s hat-trick helped rampant Wetherby RUFC batter York RI 52-7 at Grange Park on Saturday.

Andy Trotman started the rout in the fourth minute, racing from halfway to score a converted try.

It was another 15 minutes before the Reds doubled their score. Will Jefferson intelligently passed the ball back inside to Connor Sheridan for a second converted try.

The York forwards then hit back with a converted score. But once Wetherby got their hands on the ball they looked dangerous and the hosts added three more tries before half time.

First Sheridan broke through and handed on to Trotman for aconverted try before the latter doubled his personal tally.

Paul Martinski then showed blistering pace running 60 metres down the touchline to add more points.

Sheridan crossed for his treble soon after the restart which Alex Dus converted, one of his six successful kicks.

Wetherby’s final two tries came from their forwards.

George Gilbert created the first by breaching the defence and handing on to Tom Edwards to coast in.

The most popular try of the game was scored by Elliot Griffiths. Two stunning tackles by Gilbert and Martinski put the prop in the clear and he outpaced the visitors defence to seal victory.

Meanwhile, Wetherby Crusaders slipped down 24-22 to Leodiensians, despite Levi Colgan’s two tries.

Kicker Rory Foulks missed a late chance to share the spoils as his conversion from the corner went wide.
