A YOUNG sportsman is preparing to tackle a challenge of a lifetime after being selected to train with the England rugby squad.
Northallerton College student Tom Burridge was chosen from more than 100 North of England players undergoing trials for the national U16 squad.
The 16-year-old, flanker, of West Rounton, was selected after impressing coaches with his tireless work rate.
A member of Middlesbrough Rugby Club, Tom also plays for Leeds Carnegie academy, Yorkshire and the North of England.
His talents on the field have also secured him a scholarship with the prestigious rugby school Prince Henry’s Grammar at Otley, where his brother Josh, another talented rugby forward, also attends.
“I can’t wait to wear the English rose,” said Tom. “It’s a fantastic opportunity and I will certainly do my utmost to impress the coaches.”
Northallerton College PE teacher Kate Delaney, a former forward with Ilkley ladies and a rugby coach, said: “He is really dedicated and his success lifts aspirations throughout the college.
“We have watched him grow and develop from good to outstanding and he really deserves this selection. We have high hopes for Tom in the future.”
