York racecourse is the place to be this weekend as Yorkshire’s top track stages its prestigious June meeting.

Friday’s action gets under way at 2:00pm. A lot of the local trainers would like to see soft ground for their runners.

Tim Walford gives Mr Snoozy a chance in the apprentice race if there is give in the ground, likewise Scarcroft trainer Richard Whitaker wants it soft for last year’s winner Sam Nombulist.

However, it looks like both could be thwarted by the ground. Mick Easterby’s recent Redcar winner, Above Standard, could be the better bet.

Hambleton trainer Bryan Smart is a dab hand with sprinters and his Moviesta could be the one to be on in Saturday’s charity Sprint Handicap over six furlongs. The racing in action in Yorkshire continues at Doncaster on Sunday and Love Island could be worth a bet in the sprint handicap.

‘Champagne Tuesday’ at Thirsk follows with a seven-race programme from 2:20pm. The action moves onto Ripon on Wednesday for a two day meeting. Racing starts at 6.50pm on Wednesday before the course’s annual Ladies Day fixture on Thursday coincides with Royal Ascot.

Tadcaster trained Prince of Johanne did this column a massive favour when winning the Royal Hunt Cup at 16/1 last year. I wouldn’t rule out a repeat performance next Wednesday. He warmed up for Ascot by running second in the Hambleton Stakes at York and this year he was again just touched off. Also, if Richard Fahey sends recent Naas winner, Sandiva, down to Berkshire then take note.

This chestnut filly is a speedy youngster who could turn out to be top class. Finally Tim Walford is aiming high with his filly Lorimers’ Lot (100/1) in the Queen Mary on Wednesday. It could surprise a few people.
