HARROGATE HARRIERS junior athletes headed to Thornes Park in Wakefield to compete in the 2012 Yorkshire Cross-County Championships.
Competition was strong with running clubs from across Yorkshire.
Muddy conditions and a fallen tree forced the organisers to change the route, with all athletes now facing longer runs but less hill climbing.
The U-15s girls team again led the way for the Harriers.
They were placed eighth team and led home by Molly Webster in ninth, placing her on the verge of selection for the County’s team.
She was followed by strong runs from Lucy Ireland and Ciara Martin finishing in 31st and 34th places.
Ciara finished strongly and overtook two girls in the race to the finish. Millie Gray flew the flag for the U-13s girls and continued her good winter season with 44th place.
The U-13s boys team were placed 10th with Angus Reid leading them home in a superb 17th place.
Tom Warrington showed great form to grab 52nd place, closely followed by Owen Martin in 59th and Oliver Earl in 68th place.
Nat Welsby joined a competitive U-17s men’s race and grabbed himself 31st place.
Some of the athletes were fortunate to have stayed behind to watch Olympic triathletes Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee win the Senior Men’s race by some distance.
Harriers’ junior athletes will be heading to Pontefract on January 28 to compete in the North of England Cross-County Championships race.
