Woolley claims silver in Cumbrian two-day shoot

Clive Woolley from St George’s Archery Club in Harrogate travelled to Cumbria last weekend to take part in Kendal Bowmen’s two day Open Clout Championships.

Clout is a form of the sport where archers shoot from long distance attempting to drop their arrows as near as possible to a 12 inch square flag.

Shooting his English longbow Clive was aiming at the 180 yard flag.

On Saturday the competition was very close with the lead changing hands throughout the day.

Clive finished the first day in second place and, despite worsening weather conditions on Sunday, consolidated his position to claim the overall silver medal.

St George’s have had their most successful ever season of clout shooting.

Members currently hold 29 Yorkshire and three UK records and have won both individual and team championships at Yorkshire, regional and national level.

The season concludes next weekend with a Wand Shoot hosted by Abbey Bowmen in St Albans, Hertfordshire.

It will then resume in January with St George’s annual friendly season-opener, the Brass Monkey Clout, against neighbours Thirsk Bowmen.
