Walmsley buoyant ahead of Bridge trip

STUDLEY Royal captain Steve Walmsley is in high spirits ahead Saturday's trip to Stamford Bridge (1.30pm start) after his side produced a winning draw against local rivals Sessay last weekend.

The Galphay Road side gave one of their finest displays of the season as they continued their climb back up the York Senior Premier League.

Batting first, Walmsley's men fought hard to reach a total of 208-7. The skipper led from the front with 63 whilst Matt Coad and Charlie Scatchard provided valuable innings of 39 each.

"We managed to get to a decent total of over 200 which on the day was over par," said Walmsley.

He added, "Rob Nicholson made it look a lot easier than it was at the start of the innings.

"The high point was then Matt Coad's innings of 39 off about 29 balls which set us up really well."

Walmsley then turned it on with the ball claiming five wickets for just 41 runs, leaving Sessay short on 164-9.

He was supported well by a tight spell from Gary Blackburn and a fine fielding display by his side.

"As a team we fielded fantastically," said Walmsley.

"We managed to take all of our chances and our ground fielding was superb.

"All in all it was a great result from the lads."

Studley now face a trip to a struggling Stamford Bridge side where they will look to build on the form they have created over the past couple of weeks.

Bridge lost out to relegation rivals Acomb last week and now face a tough few games to try and change their form around.

"They have struggled to score 200 plus scores this year," said Walmsley.

"Hopefully we can win the toss and put them in but it is not too important.

"If we do bat first we can get a big score and then restrict them."

Walmsley knows their Premier League rivals can carry a threat to their current form and will be wary of one or two of the relegation candidate's key men.

"Danny Hagan is a good player but he has been struggling to put runs on the board," added Walmsley.

"Chapplin bowls the bulk of their overs so a lot depends on his performance for them."

He added: "We will be hoping to take 30 points from the game and looking to pull a gap from the lower sides in the league."
