Studley smiling as skipper eyes win over derby rivals
STUDLEY Royal are back after a minor blip in form and now captain Steve Walmsley is urging his side to go out and express themselves at home to local rivals Sessay tomorrow (1.30pm start).
The Galphay Road outfit stormed to a 30-point win over relegation-threatened Acomb on Saturday to pull back into Premier Division mid-table security.
Now Walmsley wants some consistency from his side as they aim for a positive end to their first season in the Premier League.
Fourth-placed Sessay can still realistically mount a title bid despite drawing against Woodhouse Grange on Saturday.
Stephen Langstaff’s men are coping well on the pitch this campaign despite the huge loss of Aussie all-rounder Dave Johnson who made the switch to Dunnington at the start of the season.
“It’s going to be a good game,” said Walmsley.
“We’ve just got to follow on from last week. It was good to get a win after the last couple of results and now we’ve got to keep it going against Sessay.
“We played them earlier in the season and I was a bit disappointed we didn’t knock off their score. We were chasing a target of something like 200 but we didn’t make it.”
On Saturday Studley had Walmsley (62), Rob Nicholson (44) and Matt Coad (37) to thank as they posted a competitive 201-8.
Andy Tute (43) stood tall for Acomb in reply but Walmsley’s 3-30 and Coad’s 5-38 saw them all out for 149 in response.
Royal’s opponents for tomorrow, Sessay, meanwhile were thwarted in their attempts to move up the ladder against Woodhouse Grange.
Grange managed to make 246-6 with Richard Till (3-55) trying his best to stem the flow of runs. Mark Wilkie (48), Nick Harrison (73) both batted well in response but they fell short on 199-6.
“We’re looking forward to Saturday,” continued Walmsley.
“Sessay are a consistent side with a good group of players. Dave Johnson left for them at the start of the season to go to Dunnington. He was a big loss but they’ve recovered well.
“I’ve heard Matt Till will be back for them on Saturday. He’s missed the last few weeks from a finger injury so he’ll be a big plus for them.”
THIRSK will be hoping record breaking batsman Des Wyrill recovers from the side injury that prevented him building on his 50no against Easingwold last week when they travel to high flying Dunnington tomorrow.
On Saturday Wyrill reached 20,000 Premier League and First Division runs after making 50 against Thirsk’s close rivals.
He was set for a big score before an injury cut short his efforts to better his half century.
His side managed to make 186-4 batting first with Ryan McKendry (67no) and Mark Cook (41) also chipping in with the runs.
Easingwold just managed to scrape through in response with the side’s last pair pulling them over the winning line despite McKendry’s 5-63.
Meanwhile in Division One, RIPON are still searching for their first win of the campaign, having lost to Hornsea on Saturday.
Batting first, Paul Nel’s troops posted 185-5 through Howard Wooding (61) and Peter Squires (68no), but Hornsea knocked them off to win by six wickets in reply.
