Studley crush Stamford as Langstaff inspires Sessay

SESSAY captain Steve Langstaff has spoken of his side's "dream start", after they racked up their fourth consecutive win.

Langstaff’s men travel to fifth-placed Acomb tomorrow with a 25-point cushion at the top of the York Senior League Premier Division.

“It’s been a dream start, really,” Langstaff said.

“We didn’t know how it would go, but it’s been incredible. Confidence is very high and we go into games believing we are going to get victories.

“Now we will see where this form takes us - we are still just targeting a top six finish.”

Langstaff inspired his team to victory against Fenner on Saturday, taking 7-40 as Sessay bowled out the visitors for 144.

Stuart Pierce also weighed in with two wickets from his first two deliveries of the day, completing a hat-trick that spanned seven days.

The home side then eased to 148-2, led by Matthew Till (57), Nick Thorne (45no) and Mark Wilkie (30).

“Stuart had Fenner at 0-2 and they were on the back foot from there,” Langstaff said.

“It was a really good fielding display, with some excellent catches taken and 144 is really well below par on this pitch.”

Langstaff shrugged off his own display, saying: "It's very pleasing, but I'm not going to blow my own trumpet". He stressed that Sessay's success has been the result of a team effort.

“Everybody sticks together and does their bit when they need to,” he said.

Sessay go into tomorrow’s game against Acomb without batsmen Nick Harrison and Nick Thorne, giving the side a chance to blood some younger players.

STUDLEY ROYAL chalked up their first win in the Premier Division with a comprehensive victory over Stamford Bridge.

Skipper Steve Walmsley said he was pleased to get the points on the board.

“It was a really good result - you can’t do much better than a 10-wicket win,” he said.

“We were positive from the start.

“The ground was looking fantastic - the strip itself was like a road - so it wasn’t ideal that they batted first, but our opening bowlers set off really well.”

The Royals got key Bridge batsman Danny Hagen out for a duck and reduced the visitors to 97-9, before a late surge took them to 134 all out. Walmsley himself took 5-27.

“It wasn’t the perfect end, but 220 or 230 would have been a par score, so we came off at half-time very happy,” the captain said.

Studley then put Bridge to the sword, Walmsley scoring 54 and Rob Nicholson crafting an unbeaten 76 as they banished memories of last week’s gutting defeat to Sessay.

“We were all very, very determined to put the Sessay match to bed, as we thought we should have won that game,” Walmsley said.

“It was a huge disappointment, especially when we see them now with four out of four at the top of league.

“Against Stamford Bridge we gave a similar performance to those we were putting in last year, and that was pleasing.”

Studley go into tomorrow’s match against Fenner without Anthony Mackle, while Ben Coad is expected to remain with Yorkshire Academy.

Walmsley has earmarked Steve Sergeant as the away side’s key man with bat and ball as The Royals look to emulate Sessay’s weekend performance and make light work of Fenner’s strong bowling line-up.

THIRSK lost to Clifton Alliance on Saturday after being bowled out for 190.

Stuart Christon hit 61 with the willow, supported by Ben England (39) and Ryan McKendry (35), but Clifton were strong in reply, reaching 191-4 thanks in part to Jason Gatus (69) and new signing Joel Hughes (43no).

They travel to Goole tomorrow.

Over in Division One, RIPON lost to Folkton & Flixton by six wickets, despite posting an impressive 301-4.

Paul Milnes hit 91 not out, Barry Kettlewell 58 not out and Alan Banks 62, but it wasn’t enough as the visitors reached 305-4 in reply, Neil Elvidge building an immaculate 158 not out.

Ripon visit Londesborough Park tomorrow.
