Runners take on testing run in Black Sheep Series

THE hardest race in the Black Sheep Series took place at the weekend, the Burn Valley Run - just about a half marathon - based on Masham.

The testing course with its many hills was made even more difficult by the gale force winds, which mostly seemd against you and not often quite with you. Gary Dunn, getting back to his best form, achieved his fourth win in five years in a time of 1.18.56, and 17-year-old Keziah Paxton had another excellent run in her first half marathon to finish 61st in 1.39.14, picking up the prize for the 2nd lady.

Hester Cox always performs well and came 106th in 1.47.29 and she got the prize for 3rd F35.Jill Knight was 144th in 1.54.28, Judith Seaton 191st, and 2nd F50, in 2.00.21, Les and Nik Sutton-Haigh, running together on Nik's birthday, 216th in 2.07.58, Nikki Atkinson 229th in 2.10.51, Eileen Howell 230th in 2.10.53, Ian Codling 250th in 2.15.50 and Marian Codling 290th in 2.50.03.

Earlier in the week, a dozen or so Harriers made the journey to Hudswell for the latest HDSRL fixture, an out and back course, uphill out and halfway downhill back, hosted by Swaledale Runners.

Keziah Paxton once again ran well to be the first club finisher in 55th place in 33.12. No doubt, Richard Hall would have finished higher up the board than his 64th place in 43.18, had he not been among the several entrants who struggled to find their way to Hudswell and thus missed the start of the race!

Lorraine Hiles, seeming to run effortlessly as always, came 81st in 35.24, managing to stay ahead of David Shorrocks, 83rd in 35.29. Nicola Booth finished 115th in 37.36, Steve Booth 150th in 40.53, Fiona needham 161st in 42.33, Pat Kirby 178th in 43.58, Ian Codling 198th in 47.41, Phillip Craig 205th in 51.28, Pam Sherlock 206th in 54.25 and Marian Codling 207th in 57.32.

Hester Cox was the club's only representative in the recent Maybeck

Three Crosses Fell Race, finishing 32nd out of 59 runners in 60.29. Noel Clough and Pete Wilkin entered the Guisecliff Gallop Fell Race, run in conjuction with Nidderdale Horse Show, with Noel finishing 6th, and 1st V40, and Pete 9th and 2nd V50. In the Mountain Bike Race in Dalby Forest, over the course devised for the recent World Cup competition, Noel was again 1st V40 and Pete was 3rd V50.

THE Black Sheep Ripon Triathlon will take place tomorrow with organisers expecting a big tournout for the popular annual event.

It will encorporate a 1500m swim, 44km cycle and 10 km run which once again this year incorporates the Police Standard Distance Triathlon National Championships and starts at Ripon Racecourse.

The event is now full but due to the inevitable no-shows, there are often places available on the day. The main race starts at 1.30pm.

Once again the event organisers and main race sponsor, Black Sheep Brewery, will provide a bouncy castles, bouncy slides and bouncy assault courses for the kids on race day.

There will also be Face painting, balloon modelling, a disco and a mobile climbing wall.

Camping, caravaning and motorhoming will also be free over the entire race weekend and on site caterers will once again be providing great value for money quality refreshments from midday on Friday until midday on the Sunday.

A ticketed Pasta Party will take place on the Friday evening and a ticketed barbecue on the Saturday.

The venue will have a temporary on licence and there will be a dedicated outside bar serving our race sponsors 'finest' Black Sheep Ale, lager and wines on both Friday and Saturday evenings.
