Royals ready for return to form

STUDLEY Royal skipper Steve Walmsley is targeting a return to form for his team after a disappointing weekend.

The Royals saw their York Senior League game at Woodhouse Grange on Saturday rained off after two overs, then must have wished the rain would interfere the following day as they were turfed out of the League Cup by the same opponents, having failing to reach 165 with the bat.

Now Walmsley hopes his players can hit back by taking the full 30 points away from the Premier Division’s bottom side Beverley Town tomorrow.

“They have not had a great start and one of their main bowlers from last year doesn’t seem to be figuring in the line-up, so we’re looking at getting 30 points,” he said.

“We are feeling quite confident, all the lads feeling up for it, and we go there with a pretty strong side.”

Studley spent most of Saturday waiting for the rain to stop, eventually starting the match despite the weather, only for it be abandoned two overs later.

“It was disappointing not to get a game, because we had a good side out on Saturday, but it was the same with almost all the matches in the division,” Walmsley said.

More disappointment was to come on Sunday, as Studley bowled out Woodhouse for 165, then crumbled in response, scoring just 116.

“We had a fantastic first-half,” Walmsley said.

“We bowled them out for 165, fielding very well, and Tom Hixon took 6-53, which was great to see, but then we couldn’t manage to knock them off, and that was a shame.”

The sole bright spot in the Royals’ batting display was a stand of 59 from Walmsley (54) and 15-year-old Nick Stuart (23) that helped them recover from 46-7.

“Nick batted really well, as he has been doing all season, but we were left feeling a bit deflated overall,” Walmsley said.

“I don’t know what went wrong, sometimes you just lose wickets.

“We were missing four players who would bat between four and eight: Anthony Mackle, Gary Blackburn, Mark Sowrey and Matt Pickles.

“Their replacements found it a big jump coming up to this level.”

SESSAY were also victims of the weather, reaching 119-4 against Stamford Bridge thanks to Nick Thorne (41no) and Matthew Till (31), before rain intervened.

They too were knocked out of the League Cup on Sunday, losing to Dunnington by two wickets.

Jacob Spencer (31) and Richard Till (46) helped them to 159-8, but the home side made 160-6 with an over to spare, despite Steve Langstaff’s 3-23.

Sessay have the chance for revenge as they travel to Dunnington in the York Senior League tomorrow.

THIRSK had Beverley Town on the ropes at 41-5 after 18 overs, only to be thwarted by the downpour.

And there was a further blow on Sunday, as they were bowled out for 161, ultimately losing by five wickets.

John Cook (39) and Stuart Christon (46) top-scored for Thirsk, while Ryan McKendry took 3-35 with the ball.

They host Woodhouse Grange tomorrow.

In Division One, RIPON’s encounter with Heworth was a total wash-out.

They entertain Sheriff Hutton Bridge tomorrow.
