Riders pushed to the limit at Scotton 100

ONE hundred riders took part in the annual Scotton 100 cycle race, an event half on road and half on rutted and mud-filled bridleways and farm tracks.

2009 runner-up Duncan Mullier of Nova had mechanical problems while in the lead group so rode ride from last to a solo and creditable 20th place in 3:40.

The 2012 event ended in a bunch sprint with York Cyclework’s Andrew Windrum taking the honours ahead of 2011 winner Paul Caswell and 2010 winner Greg Ketteringham, both of Harrogate Nova. Nova’s Mike Worden, competing in only his second edition also capped a fantastic ride by finishing with the leaders in 3:11.

Nova’s Dave Morris and Simon Ketteringham finished in 3:21 seventh and eight with Ian Chapman of Moonglu RT (3:24) and Jason Hemsley of Crosstrax (3:25) completing he top ten.

Other Nova riders were Mike Wilberforce in 15th (3:28), Duncan Mullier in 20th (3:40), Sam Frankland in 26th (3:46), an excellent rookie ride from Ted Sarmiento in 28th (3:47), Ian Caswell in 29th (3:54), Simon Hudson in 47th (4:00), Chris Mawer in 56th (4:07). Top Lady finisher was Heather Tufts of Clifton CC in 28th place in 3:54.

All proceeds went to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance Service.

The Time Trial scene has also been active with several local riders competed in the Otley 10 mile TT on the A19 between Topcliffe and Thirsk. The event was won by top national rider Tejvan Pettinger of Sri Chimnoy Cycling Team in 21 minutes dead. Top local finisher was Nigel Goscinski, showing good early season form, in 10th with 22:24. Fulford Cyles TT League Lady Champion Joanne Ketteringham of Nova finished in second place in the ladies event with 25:41 behind Team Swift’s Jo Blackburn (24:49). Nova’s Corinne Mitchell was sixth lady with 27:24.

The day before the Scotton 100 was cold and windy but that didn’t stop Steve Smales of Boneshakers-Trek finishing fourth in the VTTA 10 mile TT on the fast Humberside course. Steve clocked 20:57 in the blustery conditions, just over a minute down on his previous visit to this course two weeks before. Nova’s Tony Kent recorded 22:46, four seconds ahead of Yorkshire Road Club’s Mike Shacklock. Nova’s John Tiffany pipped clubmate Walter Wilkinson by a single second with his fastest time in nine years (26:11). Harrogatenova.com, @harrogatenova.
