Rampant Ripon eye cup win at lowly Richmond
Ripon City boss Paul Vincent is backing his side to reach the next round of the West Yorkshire League Cup this weekend.
Vincent’s side travel to FC Richmond International Academic and Soccer Academy (FC RIASA) on the back of a 5-1 victory over basement league side Pool.
The boss expects a young RIASA side to test his troops, but believes they have the firepower to blow away the Division One strugglers.
He said: “At the moment we have the belief that we are going to win games.
“The team we are playing are bottom of their league, but we aren’t going to get complacent.
“We saw in the County Cup defeat to Collingham we have no divine right to win, we have to put the effort in.”
He added: “It is a one-off cup game, they will be up for it and it is an important competition for us.
“The league is our priority, but we want to do well in the league cup.
“We know RIASA have good young players but they aren’t doing that well in the league.”
Vincent is unlikely to change the squad that wonlast week.
He said: “It is very difficult to make changes when the lads have won 5-1! “As a team we want consistency and the players know they have to put in a performance as there is always someone waiting to take their place.
“Everybody at the club is coming together as one and the players are responding to that.”
Reflecting on Saturday’s 5-1 win, in which Ripon came from behind, the boss said: “We went behind to a scrappy goal in the 20th minute, it was quite windy and Pool were trying to play a long ball game.
“We had a chat at half-time and the lads were honest enough to say they hadn’t put a good enough performance in.
“We scored withing two minutes of the second half, then went 3-1 up in 15 minutes, and ended up winning 5-1.
“In the second half we were superb, they won every tackle and header, showing real desire and commitment.”
Goals were by James Charlesworth, Banda Mahamadou, Adam Robinson and Duncan Terry. Dave King, Liam Gaffers and Mark Tyson will miss this weekend’s clash, although Pete Davies and Mark Hill are available for the encouter.
