Podium joy for Phillips at English Schools event

RIPON Grammar School student Jamie Phillips represented North Yorkshire at the weekend's English Schools Athletics Championships held at Alexandra Stadium, Birmingham.

The championships are closely followed in the athletics world as many former finalists and schools champions have gone on to international and Olympic success, with the finals shown live on Sky Sports television.

Jamie, pictured right, competed in the senior boys 200m and successfully qualified for the final where he finished eighth in 22.08.

The last race of the competition saw Jamie climb the podium as the North Yorkshire senior boys 4 x 100m relay team won the bronze medal; Jamie leading off the team with an excellent first leg.

This was the third successive year that Jamie had qualified to represent North Yorkshire Schools.

Outside of school, he competes for Wetherby Runners AC and Head Coach Ian Legg said "This was a tremendous performance by Jamie and credit to all his hard work and commitment to training.

“He is starting to attract interest from the wider athletics community as he climbs up the UK rankings.

“It is a real boost to the younger athletes in our developing club to have Jamie in the squad. We are all very proud of his achievements."
