'Bridge boss savours tasty trip to high-flying Sherburn
"THEY'LL have to watch us," is the call from uber-confident Boroughbridge boss Daz Ekin ahead of their tasty trip to near rivals Sherburn White Rose tomorrow (2.30pm ko).
The Aldborough Road gaffer is still on Cloud Nine after Saturday’s last ditch 2-2 draw at Leeds City building on their 6-0 thrashing of Rothwell seven days’ previous.
It’s so far, so good for ‘Bridge in 2010 and Ekin wants to build on that excellent platform ahead of the hectic run-in.
Sherburn will represent a tough challenge to his men but the ‘Bridge boss has faith in his players and feels they have the quality to turn Nick Peacock’s side over.
“Boroughbridge is buzzing at the moment,” said Ekin.
“Sherburn are a good side and have been for the last few seasons. Their captain is a very good player and we’ll have to watch him. But we’re all really confident at the moment, they’ll have to watch us.
“We want to build on our performance against Leeds City. It was a good result for us and I was delighted with the boys.
“It was a pleasing result and keeps us fourth in the league and that’s the most important thing. We want to be finishing in the top five at the end of the season.
“The plans are already in place for next season. We want to finish this season strongly and then push on for next year.”
On Saturday for the second occasion in recent weeks it looked like another wasted afternoon for ‘Bridge when the referee decided the running area for his assistants was too hazardous but after some sensible dialogue and a thirty minute delay the game got underway on City’s reserve team pitch.
The home side quickly adapted to the change and looked the more composed only to see ‘Bridge have the first real opportunity as Ben Mudd headed wide from an Andy Kent free kick.
This galvanized City to assert more pressure and despite a succession of corners they came up against a resolute ‘Bridge defence and ‘keeper Alastair Hogg who made two fine saves to thwart Rob Potter and Chris Blaisdale.
‘Bridge survived to the interval and eight minutes into the second half they broke the deadlock through the diminutive Danny Webster who rose above the home defence to head home a Kent corner.
Hogg preserved the lead as he turned a deflected shot round the post but concerted pressure from the home side was rewarded in the 63rd minute by Potter as he controlled a Liam Miller cross to volley home from six yards out.
Three minutes later City turned the game around when Jimmy Hockstrasser scored from a goalmouth scramble and, at this stage, they looked the more likely winners.
‘Bridge, however, showed a greater resilience as Webster hit the post from another corner and the introduction of Richie Mullens and Ben Darville gave them more attacking options.
Time was against them and it was not until the last minute that they struck as Martin Hutchinson, who had a sterling game throughout, put in a fearless header from where Mullens picked out Paul Eagling and his superb cross was met by Ben Jones to head home and secure a hard earned point.
Man-of-the-match was Martin Hutchinson.
RIPON CITY boss Charlie Brown believes therewill be “no excuses,” tomorrow when they travel to Featherstone Colliery in the next round of the League Cup (2pm ko).
Boss Charlie Brown is looking forward to the contest but isn’t underestimating their Division Two opponents. He’s hunting a return to winning ways after Saturday’s 4-2 defeat at home to Whitkirk in the league.
“We know what we have to do there’s no excuses,” said Brown.
“The cup is all mapped out now. If we win this one we’ve got Brighouse and then Kellingley the round after so we know what’s ahead of us.
“We just need to get back to winning ways.”
On Saturday Whitkirk made the trip to Mallorie Park and brought all the luck and the refereeing decisions, according to Brown.
They raced into a 2-0 lead before George Medd pulled one back. However a double salvo in the second period by Whitkirk put them in the ascendancy. City did pull one back through Mark Baranovsky from the spot but it proved a consolation.
“I don’t like to moan about the officials but there were some terrible decisions against us,” added Brown.
“Mark Tyson was sent off early in the second half. It was a nothing tackle and he gave him a straight red, we couldn’t believe it.
“We just didn’t get any of the decisions.”
BOROUGHBRIDGE RESERVES were beaten by Bardsey 4-0. Man-of-the-match was Andy O’Hare. BOROUGHBRIDGE A also lost 4-1 to Harlow Hill Reserves, Paul Scaife scoring thier goal.
Man-of-the-match was Ollie Bone and Steve Warburton. BOROUGHBRIDGE U-12s were defeated 3-1 by Knaresborough Celtic, Tom Gray scoring their goal. Match point was awarded to Shuan Richardson.
