Bramham Day 2: Afternoon Update

A second mighty dressage performance has seen William Fox-Pitt tighten his grip on the Bramham Horse Trials 2012 title.

The five-times champion was sitting first in the CCI*** on Avoca Alibi, but bettered that display on Friday afternoon on Chilli Morning to finish with 39.2 penalties.

That means New Zealand’s Lucy Jackson is down to third on Willy Do.

Great Britain’s Clea Phillips and Lucy Wiegersma follow in fifth and sixth respectively.

Northallerton rider Nicola Wilson is currently residing in 48th, on Inde.

Wilson is much further up the table in the CIC*** competition, where she and Oppposition Buzz lie tenth after the dressage.

Her second ride in the CIC, Applejack II, turned in another great dressage score of 44.7 to sit 12th.

Zara Phillips and High Kingdom, hoping to snatch the final Olympic team spot for Great Britain, are just above Wilson in ninth.

But Great Britain’s Laura Collett produced a superb dressage performance on Rayef to sit top in the CIC.

The Wiltshire-based rider swept past overnight leader Lucy Jackson by racking up a score of 37.5 penalties.

Collett and Rayef led Badminton after the opening day last year, ending with an eighth-placed finish that confirmed them as genuine challengers for Olympic selection.

Although Rayef’s cross-country isn’t quite up to the standard of his dressage, a good result at Bramham should keep Collett in the selectors’ thoughts.

The five places on the British team for London 2012 will be announced next week.

Fox-Pitt, Mary King, Piggy French and Nicola Wilson are virtually guaranteed four of those, but the race for the fifth is wide open with Collett, Tina Cook, Sarah Cohen, Lucy Wiegersma and Zara Phillips all in contention.

Meantime, in the U-25s competition, Boroughbridge’s James Somerville and Freddie Too reside in 26th place after the dressage.

New Zealand’s Lizzie Brown and Henton Attorney General lead the competition after posting an impressive 39.00.

China’s only eventer, Alex Hua-Tian is currently second on Secret Picnic.
