'Boro CC out of danger zone

KNARESBOROUGH CC picked up a much-needed victory against visitors Steeton on Saturday.

KNARESBOROUGH CC picked up a much-needed victory against visitors Steeton on Saturday.

Batting first, Steeton got away to a steady start but, after Richard Proctor had Alex Howarth stumped by Richard Tattersall, the rot set in.

Only the accomplished Neil Spragg offered much resistance and even his contribution was limited by the host's effective tactics.

Knaresborough allowed Spragg to take a single early in each over in an effort to concentrate on lesser batsmen at the other end.

Yet again, Mike Baxandall was destroyer-in-chief, bowling unchallenged to finish with another excellent return of 6-41 from 23 overs.

He has now taken 16 wickets in the last three games and 48 for the season so far.

Baxandall was given splendid support by Richard Proctor who picked up 3-54, while Richard Tattersall chipped in with three stumpings.

Neil Spragg's 31 – only ended with a superb catch by Jonathan Corcoran – enabled Steeton to reach 97 before being dismissed in 46 overs.

In the absence of James Pickles, John Dodman opened the Knaresborough innings with Jon Corcoran – doing an effective job of holding the batting together.

Corcoran was was dismissed with the score on 19 but Dodman was joined by Stuart Carey in a match-winning partnership of 60.

There was a temporary blip when Carey was caught and bowled for 35 at 79 – and Dodman caught behind for 27 with the scores at 83.

But Greg Pickles hit four fours – one of them all run – to quickly settle the match as Knaresborough ran out seven-wicket winners with 20 overs to spare.

This second successive victory has lifted Knaresborough from the relegation zone to a relatively comfortable mid-table position, and the side will be bidding for a third straight victory when they travel to Calverley tomorrow.
