AFTER last week’s valuable win at home to Stockport, Harrogate RUFC slipped back into trouble with a 24-18 defeat at Hull Ionians.
Whether it was the news that Hull City owner Assem Allam is to invest in their club with a view to taking them into National One, or the drive to win a Yorkshire derby, Ionians played with supreme confidence.
Hull touched down as early as the second minute through Gary Stephenson, and although Harrogate’s Matt Roberts kicked a penalty Hull surged further ahead with three points of their own via a Glenn Boyd kick.
A missed tackle allowed Harrogate hooker Steve Maycock to cross the whitewash, Roberts’ easy conversion bouncing off the post.
Boyd tagged another penalty but Harrogate’s good support play sent Tim Heaton over for a try Roberts converted to put ‘Gate 15-11 ahead at the break.
Ionians played with the wind in the second half and exerted constant pressure on the visitors.
Boyd kicked over two penalties in two minutes, and from this lead they never looked back.
A charge by Danny Hague at half-way released Sam Bowring to score a try Boyd converted. Roberts tagged another penalty for ‘Gate but the victory was gone.
