THE light may have faded after full-time on Wednesday night but Charlie Brown’s smile would have illuminated Wetherby Road after his side’s 5-1 victory over local rivals Boroughbridge in the Whitworth Cup final.

Ripon City wrestled the trophy off the defending champions after a rip-roaring contest which could have easily gone the way of Ekin’s men, had they taken their chances.

“We rode our luck at times,” said Brown.

“But we’ve deserved that, we haven’t had a lot over the last few games.

“We’re all delighted. Ok a few were poor defensive ones but we forced the errors and worked hard for it.

“Credit to the lads. That’s three times we’ve beaten ’Bridge this year. The aggregate score is 11-4, that’s not bad going.”

The victory means City will have some silverware to show for an encouraging season on the pitch.

Brown’s side have been up at the right end of the table since Christmas but have fallen off the wayside in recent weeks.

Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Whitkirk pushed them down to fifth.

Brown wants a reaction tomorrow when they travel to Leeds City (2.30pm ko).

“We’ve got four games left now, all four are cup finals if we want to finish in the top four,” he added.

In the BOROUGHBRIDGE camp, meanwhile, boss Daz Ekin admits he will have to work overtime to get his players mentally prepared for tomorrow’s derby day trip to Knaresborough Town.

Poor defensive slip-ups and wasted chances at the other end cost them the Whitworth.

All eyes are now on their League Cup semi-final against Bardsey next Tuesday at Knaresborough Town (7.30pm ko).

The winners will play Fields who overcame Beeston on Wednesday night after a 10-9 penalty shootout win.

“That’s the cherry on the cake for us now,” said a dejected Ekin after Wednesday’s final whistle.

“It’s the big one for us. We wanted to win the Whitworth of course but to defend that trophy would be massive for us.

“We’ve got to get the lads up for Knaresborough now, which won’t be an easy task.”

’Bridge built up for the Whitworth with a 3-2 victory over Fields on Saturday.

Goals by Dan Clayton and a brace from Paul Eagling secured the points.

BOROUGHBRIDGE RESERVES were thrashed by RIPON RESERVES 6-0.

Steve Hodgson (2), Danny Edmonds, Mark Marsden, Ryan Blanchard and an own goal wrapped up City’s result.

On Sunday Boroughbridge drew 1-1 with Scholes.

Dan Clayton scored the only goal of the match.
