A FORMER Harrogate school boy has been signed up by one of the country’s leading rugby union clubs.

Talented second rower Richard Boyle, who attended Ashville Junior School, will be making his Newcastle Falcons debut when the season starts in September.

The 22-year-old, who played for the club’s Development team at the tail end of last season, came through the ranks at his hometown club Harrogate, before coming to the attention of the Falcons coaching staff while studying at Durham University.

The Yorkshireman combined training with the Falcons Academy with his studies, and following his graduation, Boyle went on to complete a Masters at Northumbria University.

A move to National League One outfit Tynedale gave the powerful forward a chance of regular competitive rugby.

Head coach Alan Tait said: “Richard has built a reputation for himself in National League One this season as an athlete, he’s hard-working and a very talented second row forward.”

Ashville Junior School head teacher Jonathan Dolman said: “We are delighted to hear Richard’s news. The Newcastle Falcons are one of the country’s leading rugby union clubs.

“Rob Andrew, Toby Flood and Jonny Wilkinson have all played for the club and I’m sure Richard will be aiming to emulate their success.”

Boyle is currently on a tour of Spain with England Counties and will feature against a Madrid XV.
