More than 120 people packed the town hall's council chamber to see Coun Hawke take over the post from the previous incumbent, Coun Andrew Williams, at the annual general meeting of Ripon City Council, on Tuesday.

Coun Hawke, who has run his own window cleaning business in the city for more than 40 years, said: "I was very, very proud to accept those chains of office. I'm still on cloud nine, to be honest."

The day proved to be a family occasion as three generations of the Hawke family were present, including Coun Hawke's 88-year-old mother, Winifred Hawke, and his daughter, Julie Spence, who will serve as Mayoress during his reign. Coun Kenn Hart will serve as Deputy Mayor.

The meeting was followed by a parade from outside the town hall in the glorious sunshine to a civic luncheon at the Spa Hotel.

The new Mayor has launched his charity appeal and during the next year will be raising money for three causes, all with an aquatic theme.

They are Swimming for All and Water Polo, both based at Ripon Amateur Swimming Club, and Scuba Diving for All, a charity which works with people who have physical and learning difficulties.
