Menwith Hill is a strange subject for the Harrogate district.

Everyone knows something about its giant ‘golfballs’. It’s an American ‘spy base’ and has been the subject of many investigative features and campaigns over the years. Just what goes on ‘up there’ and who precisely do the Americans listen to? Do they act illegally? Should we be concerned? And do the residents of the Harrogate district really care?

Apart from a small group of people who campaign regularly against the American presence at Menwith, the rest of us have accepted that the base is a valuable addition to our local economy.

The Americans have been good spenders over the years, injecting millions into our economy in a variety of ways. They have been keen to integrate and made significant contributions to local good causes.

But above all, Menwith is a major employer and these job losses, which affect local civilian staff as well as Americans on the base, will be keenly felt throughout the district.

It’s one occasion when Menwith should be as transparent as possible on ways in which the effect of the job losses on local people and the local economy can be mitigated.
