Hundreds of forces families have celebrated the 21 Engineer Regiment’s return from six months serving in Afghanistan.

The Regiment marked their homecoming with a parade through Ripon city centre and a special service at the cathedral on Wednesday, April 3.

Dean of Ripon The Very Rev Keith Jukes welcomed the Regiment home, and spoke of the city’s pride in the Regiment.

“It is so good to have you home safe,” he said.

During the service a special candle, lit when the Regiment left for their deployment last year, was put out to mark their return.

Rev Jukes added: “The candle that we lit when you left still burns, and although that candle will be symbolically extinguished today, the prayers of this cathedral will go on.”

After the service the 500 strong Regiment marched back through the city centre to receive their medals from Major General (Retired) Keith Cima.
