THE £318m upgrade of the A1 from a dual carriageway to a motorway between Dishforth and Leeming remains on schedule for completion this weekend.

The Highways Agency, which is carrying out the scheme along the 12-mile route, said the final phase of the works – the southbound section from Junction 51 (Leeming) to Junction 50 (Baldersby) – should be completed by 10pm tomorrow (Saturday, March 31).

It follows the re-opening of the north-bound section of the same stretch on Wednesday night (March 26).

The Highways Agency had originally planned a £600m upgrade of the A1 dual carriageway between Dishforth and Barton, near Scotch Corner, to a motorway but the coalition Government announced in October 2010 it was axing the upgrade north of Leeming because of spending cuts.
