Staff from a Ripon travel agents will be walking Yorkshire’s Three Peaks to raise money for a boy’s life-changing operation.
Kate Buerdsell and Charlotte Wedgewood of Hays Travel will be tackling a 24.5-mile route up and down Whernside, Ingleborough and Pen-y-ghent on Sunday, May 4, to help the grandson of Avril Ogden, who lives on Westgate near the travel agents.
Avril spoke to the Gazette in October about how Oliver, two, who has spastic diplegia – a form of cerebral palsy –was refused complex spinal surgery on the NHS to help him walk unaided. His parents are now trying to raise £40,000 to pay for the selective dorsal rhitzomy operation.
“We came across the story in the newspaper and Avril lives literally across the road so we thought, ‘what can we do?’,” said Kate, who along with Charlotte will be joined on the walk by collegaues from Hays’ Darlington branch including former Ripon colleague Sam Beskaby.
“We’re really looking forward to it now. We just want to raise as much as we can.”
They have all been putting in plenty of walking practice and Kate said Mountain Warehouse in Ripon had been supporting them with equipment.
Speaking about their efforts, Avril Ogden – who has raised nearly £1,000 for the cause through selling wristbands in the city – said: “I’m just over the moon that people have been so generous about it all.”
