Northallerton’s Shopmobility scheme has registered its 100th member – only 16 months after opening.

The not-for profit initiative provides a fleet of scooters and wheelchairs for hire from a town centre shop.

It was developed by the Northallerton and Villages Community Forum in partnership with Abbey Health, Age UK and the Northallerton and District Voluntary Services Association

“The committee is delighted with how the scheme has taken off over the last year,” said Janet Seymour Kirk, chairman of Northallerton Shopmobility.

“Especially knowing the value the effect of independence these scooters and wheelchairs offer our residents and visitors.”

And the scheme’s 100th member – Margaret Oxford, of Osmotherley – added: “It’s been a great help. I don’t know what I would do without the hire scheme now.”

Scooters are available to hire Monday to Saturday, from 9am until 4.30pm. Powered scooters are available for £5 per day and manual wheelchairs for £3 per day. Weekend hires and hourly rates are available on request.
