A RIPON man has been honoured for his “outstanding services to the creative industry.”
Jonathan Sands was awarded an OBE in the New Years’ Honours List.
He travelled to Buckingham Palace with his wife Carolyn and sons Thomas, 25, and Harry, 18, to receive the gong on Wednesday, June 22.
Jonathan, 50, has been chairman of Leeds-based design consultancy Elmwood since he led a management buyout at the age of 27, and has lived in Ripon for 11 years.
“It’s been a fantastic day. The awards were given out by Prince Charles, which was nice because I’ve met the Queen before, but I’ve never met Prince Charles.
“After he presented me with the award I went to my seat to watch the rest of the ceremony and sat beside a man I thought I knew from somewhere.
“It was David Suchet - the Hercule Poirot actor - and he was a lovely man to talk to.
“I was so impressed by the grandeur and the military precision of the ceremony. They said it would start at 11am, and as the clock struck 11 Prince Charles walked into the room. It was incredible, and a very special day.”
Father-of-three Jonathan is a fast car lover and “moderate” golfer, and lives on Studley Road with his wife and son Harry. The couple also have a 19-year-old daughter, Polly, currently in Australia.
