Youngsters' effort for Africa

A VILLAGE school has succeeded in raising enough money to sponsor and train a teacher in the African country of Zambia.

Children and staff at Skelton Newby Hall School, near Ripon, held a variety of events to raise the required 2,000, including a sponsored sing-a-thon and a toy sale, while headteacher Peter Pozman ran the Three Peaks race.

Mr Pozman is delighted by the generosity and support of the children and parents. "This is a big deal for our little school and it teaches the children that our efforts can make a massive difference to the lives of people far away," he said.

'connection'

The story of their trainee teacher, Mutaba Sepiso, in rural Zambia had moved the whole community, he said, and the 2,000 would pay for her training and equipment for her school.

"We are both rural schools with very different opportunities and thousands of miles apart but we have made a connection and we will continue to follow Mutaba and her career with the children," said Mr Pozman.
