A youngster based at RAF Leeming has won a £500 prize for his drawing capturing the essence of military life.

Eleven-year-old Will Wright was presented with the cheque, along with a personal prize of a Hawk jet model kit, at a special party held at RAF Leeming’s youth club during half-term week.

Will was the first prize winner of a competition run by the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund as part of its Airplay programme, which provides support to young people growing up on air bases through the funding of youth workers, centres and play parks.

The competition was open to young people based at stations across the UK, and asked entrants to compose a picture which they felt captured the spirit of the Royal Air Force and Air Force life.

Standards were high, but Will’s entry stood out with its combination of a black Hawk jet, roundel with wings and poppies in a salute to former serving personnel.

He said: “There are a lot of Hawks on Station, and I was able to sit in one. I like to watch aircraft that visit RAF Leeming and hope to join up one day.”

Presenting Will with his prize was Gp Capt (Retired) Bob Kemp, RAFBF Regional Director for Scotland, Northern Ireland and North England.

He said: “We are putting a lot of time and effort into supporting young people who are growing up on Royal Air Force bases and we get a lot of positive feedback. There were a lot of entries for this competition, and Will’s was spot-on.”
