An incident this morning during rush hour on the Harrogate-Knaresborough railway line has caused rail disruption and long tailbacks on the road between Starbeck and Knaresborough.

A 27-year-old woman was hit by a train on the Belmont - or Forest Lane – crossing.

She was taken to Harrogate Hospital, where her condition is described as “serious but stable”.

Train lines were closed during the morning rush hour, and reopened by 9.15am but residual delays of up to an hour were expected, according to Network Rail.

A British Transport Police statement said:

“British Transport Police officers are currently dealing with an incident at Forest Lane Crossing, (also known as Belmont Crossing) near Forest Lane in Harrogate, after receiving reports of a female being struck by a train.

“British Transport Police and North Yorkshire officers attended the incident, which was reported at 8.02.

“The female, a 27 year-old local woman, has suffered head injuries. She was treated at the scene by paramedics from North Yorkshire Ambulance Service and has now been taken to Harrogate Hospital.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“The train involved was the 07.56 Knaresborough to Leeds Service.

“The line was handed back to Network Rail at 08.56.”

Police are not treating the incident as suspicious.
