Village primary gets eco awareness award
GOLDSBOROUGH Primary School is delighted to have been awarded an Eco Schools Bronze Award in recognition of its awareness of environmental and ecological issues.
Matt Shillito, headteacher at the school, said: “Our Eco Committee have managed the development of our school in learning about sustainability issues such as recycling, energy consumption and our role in saving the planet.
“The committee have an action plan to set out what they want to achieve to help our school become more sustainable.
“Jacob and Lauren, who are the chairman and vice-chairman of the Eco Committee, attended a mock climate summit at Ripon Cathedral, where they debated, along with pupils from around the county, global issues such as the use of energy-saving measures in the world’s richest countries.
“Our years four, five and six pupils produced posters and recorded a song which was presented to MP David Curry, who took this work to present to Gordon Brown in parliament.
“All pupils took part in an 'Eco Day' in which they made draught excluders from old tights and shredded paper, made windmills and played games to raise awareness of global ecological issues.
“The next step for our Eco Committee is to develop a strategy for recycling more materials in school and begin to compost food waste generated each day.
“The Eco Committee is also working with the Healthy Schools committee to plan and set up a healthy FairTrade tuck shop to sell healthy, tasty snacks to pupils at playtime each week.”
