Tributes after ex-Dean of Ripon's death
FORMER Dean of Ripon John Methuen, who resigned amid allegations of unseemly behaviour, has died.
Dean Methuen, who moved to London after quitting his post five years ago, had been in poor health. He died on Sunday, aged 62.
Although his time at Ripon Cathedral was surrounded by controversy, the Diocese of Ripon has expressed sadness over his death.
'saddened'
Bishop John Packer said: "Although the circumstances of Dean John Methuen's departure from Ripon Cathedral were sad, he will also be remembered for his commitment and enthusiasm in promoting and developing the ministry of the cathedral, his strong emphasis on justice and peace, and his generosity and welcome in allowing the cathedral to be a place used by many groups and causes.
"I am saddened by the news of his death at such a relatively early age, and many in the city of Ripon and diocese as a whole will mourn his passing."

The Very Rev John Methuen arrived in Ripon as Dean in 1995 and quickly became involved in the life of the city – particularly the arts and regeneration initiatives, while he will be remembered by many for helping revive the tradition of pancake racing.
But there were complaints about his “autocratic” behaviour, leading to a number of resignations among cathedral staff and eventually the Bishop ordered a full investigation.
It led to charges being brought of “conduct unbecoming a clerk in holy orders” and of “serious, persistent and continuous neglect of duty.”
Some of the charges related to allegations of excessive drinking and inappropriate behaviour towards women and were to have been heard before an ecclesiastical court, but they were withdrawn when Dean Methuen agreed to resign his position.
Despite the nature of his departure, he is remembered fondly by many friends in Ripon, among them the artist David Stead.
“I was lucky enough to spend many hours in John’s company.
“He was a man of learning and integrity for which I admired him.
“He was also a man of great humour, warmth and generosity of spirit and for this I loved him. I’ll miss him greatly,” said Mr Stead.
John Methuen leaves a wife, Bridget, and two daughters.
