A toddler had been airlifted to Leeds General Hospital after getting her hand trapped in farm machinery near Knaresborough.

The toddler was airlifted to hospital after her hand became trapped in farm machinery at a farm on Copgrove Lane on the morning of March 11.

Firefighters spent around 45 minutes dismantling machinery to release the toddler from an egg conveyor belt.

She was then airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary with her mother.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “The girl had trapped her hand in a small egg conveyor belt on the farm and after being freed by the fire service was taken by air ambulance to Leeds General Infirmary.

“The girl is being treated in hospital for a serious injury to her hand, however her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.”

Paul Metheringham from Knaresborough Fire Station said: “As far as we are aware she is in a stable condition.

“It took around 40 minutes to free her from the equipment, her arm was stuck between rollers in the conveyor belt.”

“It’s always upsetting but we are a very well trained service so can deal things we need to.”

Dave Winspear from North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “Most of the crew are actually fathers and they were obviously very concerned about the child and wanted to release her as quickly and as safely as possible.”

He added: “Obviously it is not nice seeing a child in distress but the crew stayed professional and released the girl as quickly as possible so she could be taken to hospital.

“It was very awkward to take the machine apart without causing further damage or injuring her more.”

Inquiries into the incident are continuing and the Health and Safety Executive have confirmed they have been informed and are making enquiries.
