Thank you auction for Kyle

MORE than 60 lots have been generously donated for an auction of promises organised by the family of a seven-year-old recovering from his second bone marrow transplant.

Kyle Spencer, from Northallerton, underwent the procedure in February at Newcastle’s Great North Children’s Hospital.

As a baby, he was diagnosed with the rare immune system deficiency disease chronic granulomatous disease (CGD), which left him vulnerable to everyday infections.

He underwent his first full bone marrow transplant aged just nine months but unusually, his young body gradually began to reject the transplanted material, hence the second procedure.

Having spent months in isolation in an infection-beating “bubble”, a clinically-sealed bedroom, in the Tyneside hospital, he has recovered well and last week began a gradual return to classes at the town’s Broomfield School.

In recent months Kyle, his sister Ashleigh, 10, and parents Cécile and Peter have visited businesses in and around the town to secure donations of promises for the event, to be held at the school on Monday, October 1 at 7.30pm.

Local auctioneer Mike Darwin will wield the gavel, with funds raised going towards laptop computers to help transplant patients keep in touch with their families via Skype.

The money will also be used for craft activities.

“Because craft items cannot be shared between patients, they go through a lot,” said Mrs Spencer, a theatre nurse at Northallerton’s Friarage Hospital. “Kyle enjoyed these sessions and suggested it as a focus for the funds raised.”
