A LEVEL students have had designs on their own education after helping plan a £20,000 sixth form centre refurbishment.

The new learning hub at Northallerton College will provide flexible social and study rooms for its sixth form students incorporating a careers advice area, counselling centre and the latest in Wi-Fi, flat screen and media technology.

Northallerton College Year 12 manager Stuart Wright said: “We wanted to create a real sense of identification for our sixth formers, a place within the college that they could really call their own.

“Right from the start we involved our current sixth formers in the idea, from planning to the choice of function, furnishings, floor coverings, seating, colours; basically everything from the ground up.

Sixth form student Rachel Jacques, 17, of RAF Leeming, said: “We were asked to come and look at the existing common rooms used by A Level students and to put forward our suggestions on how they could be redeveloped for better use.”

Michael Bush, 16, of Northallerton, said: “Having such a say in what the new centre will look like has given us a real ownership of the project.”

““It will be down to us to make sure that we look after such a great facility.”

The grand opening of the new centre will be held in September.
