Starbeck flower arrangers holding event for Sierra Leone

A GROUP of flower arrangers in Starbeck is hosting a special event to raise money for aid work in Sierra Leone.

The evening has been arranged by Christine Stewart, who has led a fundraising campaign to support Hillside Day School in Freetown, Sierra Leone, for 10 years.

Christine lived in Sierra Leone for many years and has sent money in her husband's memory to pay for replacement arms and legs for children at the school who lost limbs during the country's civil war in 1999.

As a result of her efforts and those of other supporters, the Hillside Day School has thrived and each year another classroom has been added so that the children - mostly orphans - can stay on until age 12, taking exams and progressing to senior school.

Major event

A teacher costs about 25 a month and a classroom can be built for just 500. All the money raised goes directly to the school, with no administrative costs, while reports are regularly received from the children on their activities and progress.

Christine said: "Up until recently there were other sponsors, but as the country becomes more stable and is not in the forefront of the news, this money is drying up so the Starbeck ladies have decided to hold a major fundraising event."

The evening of flower-arranging demonstrations, which also includes crafts and food stalls and a grand raffle, will be held at St Andrew's Church in Starbeck on Wednesday, March 24 at 7pm for a 7.30pm start.

Tickets, costing 5, are available in advance from Christine on 01423 545024, or on the door.

Christine said: "The church is giving its facilities freely, as are the three flower arrangers, so let us show the "power of flowers" and raise enough to keep the school stable for another year."
