Children from St Wilfrid’s Catholic Primary School in Ripon have been helping to plant new trees on a city roadside to mark last year’s Diamond Jubilee.

In a joint venture between Ripon Civic Society and Harrogate Borough Council, the tree planting project will bring the total number of trees planted to 60 – one for each year of the Queen’s reign. The Civic Society has been working with the borough council’s arboriculture staff to plant the trees in the planting seasons of 2012 and 2013.

For this year’s campaign the society invited children from St Wilfrid’s to help with the planting on Church Lane, near the school, so the schoolchildren can watch the flowers grow and feel a pride in what they have achieved.

David Winpenny, chairman of Ripon Civic Society, said: “Planting trees is a great way to add to the future look of Ripon, and it is children like these keen planters from St Wilfrid’s who will have the responsibility for looking after Ripon as the trees grow to maturity.

“We’re very grateful to everyone at St Wilfrid’s for helping so enthusiastically and to Paul Casey and his colleagues from Harrogate Borough Council for organising this special planting for the Jubilee.”
