School help for poor communities
PUPILS from Ashville Junior School have been taking part in a project aimed at benefiting youngsters living in the some of the world's poorest countries.
The children have been filing rucksacks with educational items and essentials for the Mary's Meals programme - an international movement to set up projects in communities where poverty and hunger prevent children from gaining an education.
The Harrogate children have been filling backpacks with pencils, notebooks, erasers, crayons and soaps, toothpaste, toothbrushes and clothing after watching a film presentation in assembly from the Mary's Meals initiative.
Ashville Junior School headteacher Jonathan Dolman said: "Following from the presentation, the children have really taken this project to heart. They have been busy filling up rucksacks with educational and essential items for the charity.
"Often families in poor countries, such as Malawi, can't afford to buy these things, resulting in many children not going to school. Our pupils were very keen to donate and help those less fortunate than themselves get the education they need."
