ONE of the most rapidly improving schools in the region has won praise from inspectors for boosting the quality of education for its students.

Pupils and staff at Risedale Sports and Community College in Hipswell, Catterick Garrison, are celebrating after receiving a positive report from Ofsted inspectors rating its leadership and management as good.

The Ofsted team described some lessons as enthralling, challenging, leading to competitive debate which was insightful and resulted in outstanding learning in all respects.

The Government inspectors singled out for praise the quality and impact of much of the teaching and the area of literacy, which has seen a rapid improvement in students’ reading skills.

In its findings the monitoring team also reported increased attendance rates and described students as “keen and eager to learn”.

Key strengths noted by the inspection report included: l A good federated leadership and management team which provides clear and strategic direction;

l Students feeling safe in college because of effective support and guidance;

l Outstanding enjoyment and learning;

l Positive student attitudes;

l A curriculum suited to meet the needs and abilities of pupils; and

l Opportunities for students to develop social and caring skills.

Under tough new criteria inspectors awarded the college an overall ‘satisfactory’ rating.

Principal John Kelly said: “This report vindicates our strong drive for improvement and positive change here at Risedale Sports and Community College.

“I strongly believe that getting the basic key skills right gives us a solid foundation on which we can provide better learning opportunities, increase our quality of teaching and attain greater student achievement.

“We still have a lot of work to do but this is a creditable achievement for the whole school, a positive step from which we can build and move forward.”
