River clearance at Low Bridge brings road closure

STAFF from the Environment Agency will be carrying out vital flood prevention work on the River Nidd at Low Bridge in Knaresborough this Sunday.

The one-day operation will mean a temporary road closure of the B6163 Knaresborough to Calcutt road, in co-operation with Harrogate Borough Council. Pedestrians will still be able to use the road.

The work is necessary to remove trees, branches and other debris which have built up against the central pillar of Low Bridge. The obstructions are a potential cause of flood risk.

Colin Porritt, of the Environment Agency, said: “When trees and branches get jammed against bridges or at pinch points in a watercourse, then more debris builds up behind them.

“If we don’t remove these obstructions we end up with a dam that holds back water, with a serious potential for floods and possible damage to the bridge.

“At Low Bridge we can’t get access to the river from the banks, so we are having to close the bridge for one day and set up platforms in the river channel in order to be able to get to the timber.”

l The Dropping Well pub will be open for business as normal throughout the day, serving Sunday lunches from noon till 7pm.
