Ripon shows off its wares – and its talent
THE cream of Ripon's independent traders took to the market square this weekend to show off what the city has to offer.
The Discover Ripon Day event, opened by the Mayor of Ripon, Coun Sid Hawke, saw shops and businesses set up stall on Saturday to promote the city to both residents and visitors.
Don Grundy of The Deli on Duck Hill, was one of those who braved the rain to support the day.
He declared the event a great success which left all ‘damp but enthusiastic.’
“It was not until the Mayor, together with four other local mayors opened the event that the rains began,” he said.
“The traders were damp but undaunted. With over 20 independent traders exhibiting their wares on the Market Square, it was a great advert for the uniqueness of RIpon.”.
“All in all a jolly good day was had by all.”
The square also played host to a talent show which saw many step up to the microphone before rain finally put an end to the event.
Organiser of Ripon’s Got talent, Simon Shaw, said: “The purpose of the event was one thing – to show the talent of our wonderful city.
“It was mostly singers but The Ripon Grammar School Big Band made the day. They were awesome – if anyone deserves praise it was them.”
The talent show, which was held in conjunction with the Lamb and Flag pub, raised 240 on the day for Ripon charities and Mr Shaw says plans are in place to hold a grand final.
