Soldiers from Ripon’s 21 Engineer Regiment have lifted more than 2,500 tonnes in ten hours – the equivalent of its vehicle fleet – as part of a weight lifting charity fundraising event.

Sixty-seven soldiers from Claro Barracks took part in the event at their Afghan site, Camp Bastion – dubbed ‘Raise the Fleet’ – which raised £9,525 for the Swaledale Mountain Rescue Team.

Raise the Fleet’s organiser Sgt Steve Gordon-Candy, 39, said he discussed options of holding a fundraising event on Camp Bastion with his colleagues and came up with the unusual challenge.

Sgt Gordon-Candy said: “We approached the boss and put the idea to him, I can’t repeat his exact words, but suffice to say he was very surprised!”

The total weight of the vehicle fleet is 2,403.9 tonnes, but the weight lifted by the 67 troops during the event was 2,513.7 tonnes.

“Swaledale Mountain Rescue Team was chosen due to its location in relation to the garrison back in the UK and the fact that most of the military charities are being inundated with donations. I believe the event is challenging to all personnel that take part andhas raised money for an exceptional cause,” said Sgt Gordon-Candy.
