Mountains of charity bags
tis Mac Cook with the bags asking for donations which came through his letterbox in 2011. (120206M3)
THESE are just some of the 80 plastic “donation bags” put through the letterbox of one Harrogate home in 2011.
Mac Cook, the Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinator for St John’s Drive, began collecting the bags - intended for clothes donations, usually to charities - after receiving complaints from other residents that they were receiving far more than they could ever use.
“It’s a waste of money,” Mr Cook said.
“How many clothes do people think we have?”
He said he gave clothes away to hospice shops whenever possible, but the vast majority of bags went unused.
“We have been inundated with clothes bags - there must be nearly 80,” Mr Cook said.
“The crowning glory was when we received one on Boxing Day.
“We’ve had another two today. It’s crackers.”

Thursday, February 16, 2012 at 10:56 AMIf its a local charity you could always post them through their letter box. mmmmm Empty of course. The ultimate is, write to them and say you need help and could they help you. You would be surprised what these "nice" charity people reply. It might take more than one letter, but, oh the satisfaction. So I am told.

Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at 09:36 PM@ willo73. next time you get a bag thru your letterbox at 6am you should contact the charity cos i reckon they probably aren't supposed to deliver before n after certain times so that households aren't disturbed by a barking dog for example.

Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at 12:56 PMLol. I actually just wish they would stop posting at my house. I don't need all these charity bags in my life. And to be fair, I just throw them away because they don't get collected. So I'll shut up! And I don't agree with posting them at 6am and waking me up. I think this is so the poster can be disguised by the dark :)

Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at 01:15 AM@ willo73. i do buy bin bags when i need to but only if my supply of charity bags is exhausted. anything i have surplus to requirement is either given to St Michael's hospice shop or offered on freecycle so to throw away charity bags would be like flushing money down the pan.

Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at 03:15 PMHave a closer look willy. Not all these bags are from charities. It will give the charities name on them if they are. Some give a destination for clothes, usually eastern europe. These are not charity bags. Programme on telly this morning showed proffessional companies collecting clothes. £40.000 per ton now. I was wondering. Is it common sense to buy a bin bag to put a perfectly good bin bag inside it. Duhhhh, think not. Throwing goood stuff away when it can be recycled is the main point.mmmm

Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at 01:01 PMI guess the point La Gioconda is the fact its charities wasting money distributing bags. Why don't you buy some bin bags rather than using charity bags?

Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at 10:17 AMwhy complain? if charities choose to put bags thru letterboxes and they are not used for their intended purpose why not do what i do - turn them inside out n use them for rubbish cos usually people with families especially tend to need more than the 2 left by the bin men.

Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at 09:17 AMWe live in Wetherby and seemingly we probably get one week a month where we receive 3+ bags in that week. They all seem to come at once. We no longer leave anything out after several times leaving bags with items in only for these not to be collected. It also annoys me that we get woken up around 6am by the bags being posted! When I have anything for charity I take this in to the shop myself. Much preferable to a collection of bags which don't get picked up.
