TWO friends from the Ripon area have organised a mobility scooter drive through towns on the east coast to raise money for charity.

Tom Linden, of Markington, and David Parkin, of Ripon, begin their fundraising effort for the Leeds-based Yorkshire Cancer Centre in Whitby today and are due to finish in Driffield on Monday, April 9, after also visiting Scarborough and Bridlington.

Mr Linden received 37 days of treatment for prostate cancer at the centre – located at St James’ Hospital – last year and said he “wanted to give something back”.

“People usually do marathons or long walks and this sort of thing to raise money but for health reasons I can’t and this was the only thing I could think of,” said Mr Linden.

“I’m trying to give something back having had fantastic treatment at the centre.”

Mr Linden and Mr Parkin plan to take the mobility scooter around the towns’ central streets and visit popular destinations such as pubs, restaurants and harbours, to collect donations from people.

Funds raised by them will go towards the Yorkshire Cancer Centre’s appeal to raise £10m to further enhance the facilities at what is Europe’s biggest purpose-built cancer centre.

They are being helped in their challenge by Batchelors of Ripon which has lent them a support vehicle – an Isuzu Rodeo – from the Chapmans of Pickering dealership it owns, as well as providing fuel.

Printworks Online in Wetherby has provided them with leaflet publicity while Able to Enable, of Harrogate, has lent them the mobility scooter plus ramps and clothing.

Mr Linden and Mr Parkin have also held fundraising collections in the Yorkshire Bank branches of Ripon and Knaresborough.

l Anyone wishing to make a donation can do so by visiting the website www.justgiving.com/givingback or by going to any Yorkshire Bank branch and asking to make a donation to the Mobility Scooter Drive account, account number 35679092, sort code: 05-07-17101.
